Mars Retrograde Career Guide: When to Push and When to Wait

Mars Retrograde Is Different From Mercury Retrograde

Everyone knows Mercury retrograde. Emails go wrong, contracts get messy, communication breaks down. People brace for it, make jokes about it, and generally survive it. Mars retrograde is different. It does not get the same attention, but it has a much bigger impact on your career momentum.

Mars governs drive, aggression, ambition, and the energy you bring to pursuing your goals. When Mars goes retrograde, which happens every two years for about two and a half months, your normal go-getting approach stops working the way it usually does. Projects stall. Initiatives that you pushed forward with confidence suddenly feel stuck. The aggressive pursuit that would have worked last month backfires this month.

What Actually Happens During Mars Retrograde

Mars retrograde does not break things the way Mercury retrograde does. It slows them down. The deal that was about to close stays open. The promotion you were pursuing goes to someone else, or the decision gets delayed. The initiative you launched with momentum hits an unexpected wall.

The natural reaction is to push harder. That is what your instincts tell you to do. It is almost always the wrong move. During Mars retrograde, pushing harder does not break through the wall. It makes the wall stronger. The energy that would have worked during direct Mars is scattered and less effective during retrograde.

I have learned this the hard way. A few years ago, during a Mars retrograde, I pushed aggressively on a business development deal that should have closed quickly. I followed up constantly, applied pressure, and tried to force the decision. The deal did not close. Worse, the relationship soured because my intensity came across as desperation. When I finally stopped pushing and let the deal breathe, it closed two months later, after Mars went direct.

What to Do Instead of Push

The right strategy during Mars retrograde is to prepare rather than pursue. Instead of launching new initiatives, spend the time shoring up the foundations of existing ones. Instead of pushing for decisions, gather the information that will make the decision obvious when Mars goes direct. Instead of confronting problems directly, work around them.

Mars retrograde is a good time for strategic planning, skill building, and relationship maintenance. The aggressive moves that would move your career forward during direct Mars are risky during retrograde. The safe moves that would feel like treading water during direct Mars are valuable during retrograde.

The Mars Retrograde Dates You Need to Know

Mars goes retrograde approximately every two years for about ten weeks. The next Mars retrograde will be in late 2026 into early 2027. Knowing when it happens allows you to plan your aggressive career moves around it. If you have a major initiative to launch, a negotiation to close, or a promotion to pursue, do it when Mars is direct. During retrograde, focus on preparation and consolidation. The six months before a Mars retrograde are the best time to push hard because the momentum will carry you through the slow period that follows.

The same logic applies to timing your job search. If you start looking during Mars retrograde, the process will feel slower and more frustrating. If you start looking three months before a retrograde, you can do the active searching while Mars is direct and use the retrograde period for interviews and follow-ups, which benefit from the slower pace.

How Each Sign Experiences Mars Retrograde

Fire signs feel Mars retrograde most acutely because Mars rules their energy. Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius will feel the frustration of stalled momentum more than other signs. They need to consciously stop pushing and redirect their energy into preparation.

Earth signs handle Mars retrograde better because their default pace is slower anyway. Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn may barely notice the difference. But they should use the period to double down on the steady work that compounds over time.

Air signs may actually benefit from Mars retrograde because it forces them to slow down and think instead of acting impulsively. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius should use the period for strategic planning.

Water signs need to be careful not to internalize the frustration of stalled momentum. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces may feel the slowdown as personal failure. It is not. It is a planetary cycle. Use the period for reflection rather than self-criticism.
